Block Cleaning

Hi Folks - Am working on a 59 Case 800 diesel. Found a replacement block for it, as the one in the tractor is severely cracked. I just pulled all four sleeves out of the replacement block and am wondering what the best way to clean it is. Not really rusty except for in the wet sleeve coolant passages, but is oily and grimy from 20 + years in someones shed. Whats the best way to go about this? Im a younger feller who doesnt have any experience in this field of engine work, so excuse my ignorance. Thanks for the replies

I was rebuilding a motor a few years ago. I got it all cleaned up and even painted, then I finally gave in to that nagging voice and took it to the automotive machine shop for inspection. The next day they called me and told me that it was junk because of some water jacket rust that I had not seen. I sure was glad that I didn't spend a lot of time and money on it. Take the crank too. They will at least inspect it and tell you that it is OK, or tell you what it needs. Then they can machine as needed and tell you what bearings you need. They can also order the bearings if you want and save you money on them.

Take it to a machine shop that specializes in diesel repair.

Have them hot tank it, and inspect it for cracks. Same with the head.

I assume you have the original main caps for the block. If not, it will have to be align bored.

Since you are not experienced in engine rebuilding, I would highly recommend you let the machine shop inspect and assemble everything. Diesels are not like old gas engines, they are unforgiving of mistakes and short cuts. A small mistake WILL cost you dearly!

If you still want to DIY this, get a detailed shop manual and follow it to the letter before going any farther. You will have to buy or borrow some micrometers, torque wrench, and maybe some special tools. The head will still need to go to the shop.

I recommend take it to a machine shop . So they can get a good look at it. Have the them check it for cracks .Remove all the soft plugs first.
That it can flushes out all that rusted crude.
Don t assume that block is good, check it out.
