Trouble starting 8N

Just bought this tractor for restoration. Heard it run before purchase. Tractor has new plugs good spark will fire and stumble on either. But will not start on fuel confirmed fuel at carb and bowl. Firing order is correct. I suspect timing may be off. When engine turns over blows back through the carb but not on every compression stroke. Is this a good diagnosis. Running a resistor at distributor & 12 volt battery. Any thoughts

Hello Lewi welcome to YT! Not a Ford expert but have
you had the distributor off the tractor or loose and
turned it quite a bit since you have had it? If not the
timing cannot be off. The only way it can be off is if the
wires to the plugs are not on correct, which you claim
is correct. You say that you ..confirmed fuel at carb
and bowl.. not sure what ..bowl.. you are talking about,
could be the glass sediment bowl under the tank or the
bowl or bottom of the carb. Did you check to see what
kind of flow comes out of the actual drain on the
bottom of the carb? It should at least flow a steady
stream after the initial drain down of the carb bowl if
any comes out at all. Keep in mind that there may be a
fine screen in the fitting that screws in the carb where
the fuel line attaches, see link. Since you saw it
running how long has it sat? The reason I ask that is
that blowing back through the carb is a symptom of an
intake valve that is sticking open. A compression test
would tell you if that is a problem.

Thanks for replying. Fuel tank is clean screen at the shutoff is clean. I removed the line good fuel flow. Good flow at the petcock on the bottom of the carb. I will check and see if the screen is clogged at the carb. I ll do a compression test over the weekend. Tractor has sat for 10 + years but I heard it run before I bought it. I bought it with the bush hog for $800 so it s all good.

If your flow is good out of the bottom of the carb the
inlet screen is not your problem. Sometimes the
screens in the top of the sediment bowl under the tank
get removed. Then that little screen in the carb fitting
has to catch everything. Owners pull the line off at the
carb and see it flows there good and say the fuel flow
to the carb is good. When in reality that screen is
plugged stopping gas from getting in the carb. I
figured that may have been your problem since you
hauled it on a trailer and jostled the fuel in the tank
around stirring up the crud an having it flow down and
plug that screen. Now knowing this, there is still a high
chance that there are passages in the carb that are
plugged so the fuel is not getting in the engine.

As a newbie, best investment is to now get the essential manuals. We need more info. First, is it an early 8N with the front mount distributor or the later side mount
distributor? Next, is it wired as a OEM 6V/POS GRN System or has someone done a cobbled up 12V switcheroo job? Finally whatever, is the wiring all correct? Root cause
problem solve and never start yanking parts off willy nilly without troubleshooting. Fuel Flow Test with engine cold fist. Front mount timing is set a certain way on
your bench then mounted a certain way. Know B4 you start.

Thanks Tim, my plan is to get the machine operational then break it down and sandblast the entire machine and prep for paint. Any suggestions on manuals?
