Weak / Tightening Farmall 450 Brakes

Good morning all,

I recently acquired a Farmall 450 and was able to get the whole tractor running beautifully. The previous owner supposedly put on all four new brake discs, as well as new boots and new bolts for the cover. The brakes on the tractor are strong but they won't lock up the tires no matter how hard I depress the pedal, which I figured is fine. However, I'm in Maryland and we have a lot of hills. If I'm on a hill, the brakes will barely slow it down, no matter how hard I depress the pedal. On flat land, the brakes are able to stop the tractor sufficiently but require a bit of force if I'm moving fast. Could this be an adjustment in order to tighten them? Could something be together wrong like not lubed? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Ryan.

TDLR: Brakes stop the tractor on flat but won't hold the tractor's weight on a semi-decent hill, no matter how hard they're depressed.

Edit: If it makes any difference, the rears are liquid filled and have wheel weights.

Ryan, I would suggest complete disassembly of the
brakes. Mainly pull the actuators apart by removing the
4 springs around their perimeter. Buff off the balls and
buff out the duvets they set in. Get some graphite
powder to lube them for reassembly. Use a flapper disc
on an angle grinder to take the glaze or shinny surface
off the actuators and the other two surfaces the disc
run against. Then with 80 grit block sand the glaze off
the lined disc surfaces. If this does not do it the brake
covers may need to be machined down to get the
actuators working in their intend part of their stroke.
There is a measurement to be made. I will try to look
for it tomorrow.

I would recommend you post any future items on your
tractor on the Farmall and IH section. The Restoration
and Repair section does not have the highest viewing
numbers. The TA work must have came out okay. That
is a very complex job for a young man, congratulations
to you!

Sounds like Your disks are glazed, get them turned even new discs should be surfaced, if this fails, Check your pressure on the break cylinders at the pads, if it is low work backwards toward the peddle.

Dutch, you are pretty new here and your input is
appreciated. Can you give me a bit more detail on why
a new disc should be surfaced? I do not think this
really applies to Farmall mechanically applied brakes,
also there is no pressure to check.

I have had the same problem with a 240 that has the same system. I feel that it is quality of the discs. On this 240 I replaced the discs; replaced the springs and ball and resurfaced the insides of the brake cover. Very little to no brakes. I think the disc material is too hard for this application. After all they come from the Land of Almost Right.

Take apart , free up links and pins ,glass bead blast everthing. Especially the ball riser ,replace the springs while your at. It will stop great after you adjusted it correctly .

Guys FYI! this is another old thread, Jack plopped one in on it missing the date. I helped this young man of 15 years over the phone last April to piece together a working TA in this tractor, his trans oil looked like milkshake. He lives with his mom in Maryland if I remember right. Makes his keep and money to buy this tractor by doing lawnmower and small engine repair.
