I am restoring a IH super c and would like any sage advice I can get on some sort of coating I can put on the (rear) axels to help stop rust etc. that won't look like it is painted.. I am leaning towards some sort of oil that dries (tung?) , or maybe wax.. anyway I would like something not slippery or sticky to step on...

ou asked for sage advice. I wouldn't go so far as to call my advice that good. I am really asking what you intend it to look like when you are done. If my guess is right, you want to preserve the patina on a rusted part without having it continue to deteriorate.

This is a website that talks about preserving patinas with clear coat and mentions flattening agents, which would help the painted rust look less like it has been painted:

And one to make patinas:

Automotive clear coat is good, but the solvent based semi-wet look lacquer sold at the big box lumber store for coating concrete is very easy to slop on without drips and runs showing up. It is made for outdoor exposure on concrete walks, so penetrating porous surfaces, UV and abrasion resistance are the primary requirements. It is water thin, mostly solvent and goes on very thin. The concrete still looks like concrete, and stones look a little darker, but not like they have been painted. It has kept my shower grout from mildewing for 12 years so far.

thanks for the reply/ information... not exactly the look I am looking for, but still good information, maybe for future project, you never know when this kind of information might come in handy.

You could use something like Everbrite protect-a-clear even with several coats on metal
, you cant see it

I used it on the polished disc on my Gs and theyve been out in the rain several times with no rusting

I used thread spray in a spray can like paint. But its not
paint just for coating threads on drill pipe. It is flat black
and looks good. Plus its not like paint that when u need
to slide the hub it will scrap off. About the best thing to
use. Paint is no good. And to just spray lube them
attracts dust.

g u n barrel blueing compound

I found a product called Flood Floetrol... it is designed to be mixed with house paints as a leveler.. I got a tip, that it is good to use straight (not mixed with paint) on bare steel as a preservative... I just happened to have a bottle of it left over from painting my basement walls.. I tried a section on the axels and it seems to have the desired effect, it took about a day to dry and looks like I oiled the metal...but not sticky or slippery, have to wait and see how it holds up.
