Farmall H fuel to spark plugs

[b:e1e35aee75]My tank is full, great flow out of the carb. drain but can't get gas to plugs. Air intake seems to have a lot of suction. New carb, new fuel filter no fuel to plugs great spark. Any ideas?[/b:e1e35aee75] OOPS! Farmall model H tractor

Welcome Bob!

When you hold your hand over the carb air intake, does it wet your hand with gas? If no, the main
circuit is plugged, main adjustment screwed in too far, tip of main adjust screw broken off in main jet.

If it delivers gas to your hand it should get up to the cylinders.

Are you checking the spark at the plug end of each wire? Has the firing order been disturbed or the
distributor out?

If it has been stored a while, a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder will raise the compression, maybe just
enough to get it going. How is the oil level, no overfill because of gas contamination?

Hello Bob welcome to YT! While I appreciate all the
info you gave us in bold, but you did not go quite far
enough. I do not have to be a detective to figure out
that you probably did not decide to put a new
carburetor on a tractor that ran perfectly. So where are
you at? Tractor ran before? A first start after you did a
big tear down? If it did run before did you have the
distributor off the tractor after that?

We are kind of like computers, better info in, better
info out!

While many small engine carb presets on the main jet
are 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated on an H should
be 2 1/2 to 3 turn. Main fuel screw comes out the
bottom and angles back. I seriously doubt that if you
have it set a little more closed than it should be it
should still attempt to run. Any bit off the seat should
let the choke pull gas up the main jet. It almost sounds
to me like your new carb has a flaw that is not letting
fuel up the main fuel tube.

What is the gas level in the float bowl? The level can be accurately determined for trouble shooting by threading a barbed adaptor into the carb drain hole then attaching a piece of clear vinyl tubing.

Carb. bowl is full. The shaft running from the tractor is not moving. I pulled the cover off the return line from the top of the block, there is a small push rod there is not moving up and down when the engine is cranked over. It is inside a case. Should I take that flat shield on the case off for a look see? What should I look for. In other business. on the magneto rotor-cap there is a stamped #1. Does the #1 plug wire go on top or below thar?

Thank you Bob

Do not go dinking around inside the governor, that is
what is behind that flat D shaped plate. The linkage
from the governor you are seeing operates the angle
the throttle plate sets at and is sort of connected to
the throttle control lever by the steering wheel. It is
doing the job of the accelerator pedal in an old school
car. It should be in one position with the lever ahead
and another with the throttle back or open. If the
distributor is timed correctly the number one plug wire
goes it distributor cap terminal tower closest to the
circled number one and the cylinders are numbered 1
at the front nearest the radiator and 4 closest to the
gas tank. Now I did not type the questions in my first
reply because I like poking buttons on this phone. That
information will be almost as helpful as the bold print
info you already gave. So in other business please help
us out with that. Thx!

Okay, seeing that you installed a new carb are you
certain you got the tab from the governor rod placed
correctly in the notch in the wide ..V.. on the carb
throttle shaft at the joint between the aluminum tube
that connects to the carb? It should still start if it is out
of place but usually will not idle down. Can you at least
answer if it was running before you started working on
it? Have you had the distributor off since it last ran. A
little more story of what you have going on never hurts.
Often times it is a small detail that the poster does not
feel is important is the thing that solves the problem.
As far as the level in of the gas in the carb bowl you
say is ..full.. how are you determining that, x-Ray
vision? The carb bowl is not the clear bowl under the
tank. That is called a sediment bowl. Here video of
what showcrop is suggesting you do to see the level of
fuel in the carb bowl. It is for a motorcycle carb but
same principle. The threads in the IH carb bowl are 1/8
inch pipe thread. Go to the 6:45 mark to see the
process and it will work with the carb on the tractor
just as well.
Clear hose carb fuel level test

Why dont you shoot 5or 6 shots of gas into each cyl
when u have the plugs out. Put plugs in and start it. If it
starts and then stops that confirms the electrical is good
and you can continue looking for your fuel problem. Its
that easy.

FWIW, pull the bowl off the carburetor and see if the gasket has holes that match with the holes in the bowl. Many rebuild kits come with several gaskets to cover several similar models of carburetors, their may be a chance one or more of the fuel galleys is covered by the gasket between the bottom an the top, stopping the fuel flow. While you have it apart blow air through each passage way, to be sure they are not blocked from rust, etc that may have found it way into the carburetor.
Another thing that would interfere with the fuel being drawn it to the cylinders is if their is a significant air leak between the carburetor, intake manifold and head.
