Massey 555 steering box leak

There are five square shims in behind the square flange where the shaft enters the box. The shims are split on one side. Had it apart awhile ago to replace the seal. Put it together with
nothing but the shims. Just noticed that the joint is leaking. Wondering how best to fix it.

The shims are to set the preload on the bearings.

You want to add or subtract shims until the shaft has no in and out play, but not so tight there is binding.

Once the preload is correct, remove the cover, stager the cuts and apply a thin coat of sealer, like Permatex, to the shims.

Thanks Steve

Yup I think the shaft end play is pretty close. Will stagger the shims. What Permatex product do you use?

In my opinion anaerobic sealer would be the ..best.. for this, see link. On most newer tractors for example this is what is used between two machined surfaces such as where and axle housing bolts to the side of the rear end housing and no gasket is used. However, for this the area of the split in the shims is so small just about any sealant will do such as a small amount of RTV, just like a smear on the surface.
Example Anaerobic sealer

The reason I asked is that a few of these shims are so thin that if you used a silicone based sealant and you put it together and find out that the silicone layers have become like another shim and the shaft is now too tight and you have to try and take it apart you are screwed. Was hoping that there would be another non silicone based sealer that could be used in this application.
