8n tries to start

My 49 8n tries to start but just cannot quite make it. It cranks and will actually start and run for just about three seconds. It will do this several times until I stop trying. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Is this the first start for this spring or was it running last week? Sorry, but from how it is acting the dumb questions have to be asked. Is the gas valve on and is there adequate gas in the tank? Otherwise it sounds like the main jet in the carb has gotten plugged.

It has been starting good all winter. I routinely start it about every two weeks during winter and let it run 10-15 minutes. I have checked fuel through carburater. Seems to be flowing good. I checked by removing bolt at bottom of carb. I have not checked firing. I assumed firing was ok since it tried to run for a few seconds.

Thanks

When you drained the carb bowl, did you hold a pint, or larger, jar under the drain and see if the flow remained the same while it filled the jar? Also how long did it take to fill the jar. Do that check if you did not.

Has it been converted to 12 volts? Does it have a resistor by the coil, this would look like a white ceramic block with terminals for the wires to connect to. If so is there power on the coil side of the resistor with the switch on? Do not leave the ignition on without the engine running any longer then you need to do the check.
