new distributor issue

The center button on the cap is probably bad. I bought a new cap that wouldn't start at all and replaced it with a different brand and didn't have any more trouble.

Possibly over oiled if there is oil getting on the points.

There could also be a bad electrical connection, a faulty connection at the points, where the wire connects through the housing, a bad wire, a short to ground.

Could easily be bad set of points or a bad condenser. Very common for them to be bad new out of the box.

Is the distributor hold down clamp tight? That not only holds the distributor from turning, but it also provides the ground for the housing.

Had a distributer do that to me once. Would start and run perfect. When working it, it would start to miss and backfire. Got PO'd and smacked it with a crescent wrench and ran perfect. Kept on going through this cycle. Then I took it in and had them run it on the test equipment. The weights would stick at higher rpm, so probably when the govorner kicked in. Just saying!

Distributer shop /rebuilder fixed mine, but if both of yours are doing that, I doubt that's what it is. Is is some how looseing grounding?
Try grounding it with an alligator clip to a good ground and see if that changes anything.

(quoted from post at 23:39:16 03/03/23) That is what I am hoping/thinking, weights sticking , no clue why on new distributor. How did you fix that?
Also weird the old distributor had the same missing/backfiring issue.
Another theory is the gear that drives the distributor is worn or has play under load.
eights affect timing....not a miss/backfire.

Is the new condenser tight in hold down sleeve making a good contact to ground.
Did you clean the new points contacts with electrical contact cleaner and a business card to get the rust inhibit off the manufacturing put on them ?

When was the valve lash last checked/adjusted?

What is the condition of the points? If it has been 8 (+/-) months, the points could be dirty or burnt depending on several factors (such as did it stall and the key get left on for a few minutes, contamination, quality). It sounds like this tractor sets a lot then is asked to work for just a few hours before setting again. Is it setting under cover or out in the open? I would check the valve lash, check and install new good quality points if needed (who knows what the points in that rebuilt distributor are), set them to spec, properly adjust the timing, and see what happens.

Are you still mowing as you described in your previous thread?
