1941 W4 STARTER, WON'T ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL

W4 MCCORMICK

i'm early stages on this restore. only had the tractor running from a crank start. so i just got done cleaning up the starter, was very dirty and greasy inside. cleaned brushes, armature, commutator, bearings looked good and had good fit, cleaned up the pinion/spring/bendix system and lightly greased it. i assume this is tractor is positive ground (so pos to starter frame and neg to starter terminal). starter ran ok but did not engage to the flywheel. is it possible the grease is holding the pinion up? thanks

Are you just using some type of jumper cables to do this? Likely elcheapos you get now days with conductors in them not much bigger than a pencil lead, take a look and see what the conductor size really is. On a 6 volt those jumpers will not carry the amps required to get the starter to spin up fast from a stop. The drive on that starter relies on the inertia of it lagging behind the momentum of the armature to push forward to engage the flywheel gear. If you were already using a 12 volt battery then what I am saying will not apply. If you were using a 6 volt bring a 12 volt vehicle or battery up to it and try again, see what happens. Six volt starters have been used on 12 volt systems that have been converted for years, no problems.
FYI, in the future you should post your issues with this machine on the Farmall and IHC topic section since your tractor falls under the IHC umbrella. It will get many more views over there, see link.

thanks used red MN for your reply and suggestions to a better farmall site for my w4 restoration. yes, you are correct...i was testing w/a 6v battery and some jumper cables. i then hooked up w/a 12v battery on the bench and the pinion snapped to the end, lol starter almost rolled off the bench! what lube would you suggest for the bendix assy? thanks again
