Hello i just bought a case 1740 uni loader gear box and 188 diesel engine is locked up my question is why cant i put my new engine in side ways and run 3 v belts to a new straight 1 piece drive shaft that will feed the clutch drives and install hyd pump on engine and completely get rid of gear box assembly i think pulleys need to be around 8 inches or so should set you in-between of what the variable speed used to do and have 1 stationary speed im thinking direct drive any help would be great and thanks

Hello Honey ; > ) welcome to YT! I know nothing about
your little loader I just got done looking through some
of the online parts pages for it to get an idea of what
you have going on. My first question would be is do
you have a lathe so you can do your own machine work
for this project? If not there is probably $200 out the
window on the low side. Is the engine you are thinking
about using free? If not another big strike against this
project versus repairing it in stock form. Does the
engine have a provision to mount the hydraulic pump
and drive it? Lastly I am going to say if you are sticking
with one speed in will probably have to be geared at
nearly the lowest speed it operates at now. Otherwise
you will be bearing the steer clutches out left and
right. I think all in all once you get done with one speed
I doubt you will like how the machine performs. I would
suggest you look at the gear box part number in the
parts list I attached and web search it to see how much
a used one would be. This would give you an idea of
where you stand as fair as which road to take repair
back to stock or install bastardized engine.
Loader parts

it sounds like you bought it as a parts machine and now want to turn it into a runner. there have been a couple of projects done by people here doing this.
last winter someone did this, there is a thread on the subject, it turned into quite a long project to get it operational and then there were issues with it
overheating. good luck with the project.
