Ford 861 rear axle fluid

The manual calls for mild extreme pressure lubricant SAE 80, both summer and winter. Given the advancements in oil over the past
60 years, I'd think that nearly any gear oil will work. IIRC, many folks on this board use the universal tractor transmission
hydraulic fluid. If you google those terms, you will see a bunch of information.

Steve, Could you go back a week or so and see my posts about a 1958 Ford 3 point hitch hydraulic lift problem? Trying to get the arms to lift, but can't. Tried others suggestions, but nothing is working yet. Ken

Wait...your SUBJECT says ...rear axle fluid... then your post says ...crankcase...; they are not the same but you probably know this. The engine has a crankcase
and is for engine OIL not trans and hyd oil. For Engine Oil you can choose whatever brand and type you want, Shell Rotella, SAE-30, 10W-40, whatever, will be fine. For
the hydraulic and transmission oil, FORD TRACTOR OEM SAE 80 but the FORD MC134 is no longer made and supplied by CNH now. You might get lucky and find your local
dealer still has some in stock. Many use a good standard ATF Fluid especially in colder temps. Traveller FORD HYD OIL and NAPA SAE 90 API Gear Lube are GL-1 grade and
will work fine. I live in MICHIGAN and have used the latter two brands with no issues. Best to invest in The ESSENTIAL MANUALS for your tractor - OWNER/I&T FO-20/53-59
