Snapped off bolt/stud

Afternoon all. Massey 555. Snapped off the bolt/stud on the left operators platform. Looks to be about 7/16. As you can see with the gearbox cover off I can get a drill near vertical. The hole for the opposite platform looks to be pretty deep (1 1/2) so if i can get hole in this stud there might be a bit of a cellar that could be filled with penetrating oil. Any words of wisdom before I start? What size should I start with? Cobalt or standard HSS bit? Im thinking that cobalt bits would be too hard/brittle for a job like this

Weld a washer to it, getting it as hot as you can in the process. Let it cool to ambient, then weld a nut to the washer, again getting it as hot as you can and again allow it to cool. Apply some penetrating oil and give it a chance to soak in, then try to work the broken part loose. It will probably come out, if NOT and weld breaks loose, repeat the whole process as needed. An alternative method would be to simply blow it out with a cutting torch, if available.

My concern would be drilling it out. If you end up drilling all the way though you will get steel bits in the axle. Can you take the bolt out on the opposite side? If so it would give you dimensions of the depth to drill and limit the drilling to only the bolt.

I only is the weld washer/ nut method. But I take a die grinder touch up the stud alittle. Turn up the heat weld it hot. You can keep your drills and easy out!!!

Wire brush the bolt ,penetrate oil soak . Take a center punch and drive punch at slight angle CCW , hit punch on outside diameter of bolt it might spin it loose . Looks to me it work ,worth a try .

Welded on a washer and nut and put a wrench on it and out it came

Congratulations!! successfully removing a broken off bolt or stud is one of life's greater moments. Thanks for posting back.
