MF35 Clutch Failure

I was doing some slashing using my early 4cyl diesel dual clutch MF35 when the primary clutch failed to disengage whilst in reverse. The PTO clutch still worked (I think). Thereafter the clutch pedal seemed a lot lighter to depress, although of course, the primary clutch was not operating. I am no mechanic, however, I split the tractor hoping to identify the issue. All I can notice is that one of the (pressed steel) fingers is 1/4 inch (6mm) closer to the pressure plate than the other two (which are at the same height). 40 years ago I had a similar failure with this tractor and all I can remember is that I found a broken bolt which I replaced and all has been ok 'till now. It is the original clutch I believe, (tractor has probably done about 5000 hours but has suffered a couple of failed tacho cables which I have been very slow to replace). The clutch pedal height was ok before failure, but I have never done any other clutch adjustments. Any clues as to what I should be looking at?

Have you removed the Clutch assembly from the FLYWHEEL.?

My 1963 MF 35 had a clutch failure. The PTO continued to operate properly, however, there was no POWER being transmitted to the rear differential.. (NO forward and or Reverse Gears.. 6 speed with NO multiplier)

I'm NOT suggesting your MF 35 has the same failed component as my 1963 MF 35. Possibly worth checking....?

I was about to ask the same thing as JD D if you had pulled the pressure plate off the flywheel yet? My guess is you will find a chunk of lining has come off and it is stack up double so it cannot release. That is what is holding the one finger down. Or something has broke on the pressure plate.

Thanks Bob for the suggestion and picture. Whilst I still have (had) drive to the rear wheels I could not disengage. I got around temporarily by selecting first gear and then selecting low range. To stop I had to cut the fuel. As you suggest the next logical step is to remove the clutch from the flywheel and I will check out exactly how to do that and post what I find

Thanks for your reply. I will have a shot at removing the clutch as I guess that is going to be a must without a miracle cure!

Sounds like the pressure plate failed.

That clutch is sold as a complete assembly, pp, clutch disc, and PTO disc. Best to just replace it all.

Replace the release bearing and pilot bearing too, while you are in there. Now would also be a good time to replace the input shaft seals on the transmission, a little involved, but doable from the front.

Pay close attention to which way the offset of the clutch discs go, the spring side away from the flywheel, very important! Tighten the pp bolts evenly as to pull the cover down slowly so not to warp it.

Most clutch kits come with a plastic alignment shaft for the clutch discs. Near impossible to get them aligned without it. The engine must mate back up fully with the transmission with only hand pressure. Trying to force it together with bolts is sure to damage something! Don't let the weight of the engine hang on the input shaft.

The clutch pedal will need to be adjusted when done. It needs about 3/4 inch freeplay at the top. Loosen the pinch bolt at the bottom of the pedal arm and rotate it on the shaft.

You were on the money there! I pulled the clutch off and clutch material dropped to the floor. Now I notice a large amount of play in the primary input shaft!

Thanks for the advice. you will see from the photos what happened. I will replace the other items as you suggest however There is a fair amount of play in the primary input shaft so that will have to be fixed, not sure whats happening there, however it sounds like the source of a noise I have been hearing for some time when I had the hydraulics under full load lifting things at the tractor limits (and a little beyond)!

Good day blackstone1913 ..
Is your MF 35 Transmission a 6 speed NO MULTI POWER.?
Pics are of a 1963 MF 35 Transmission a 6 speed NO MULTI POWER....

As per pictures....

My dual clutch appears to be the early springless (???) type. Should I source the same type or can I use the later type? That is, are they interchangeable? If so, Is the throw out bearing and assembly the same?
