Stumped Ford 8N

Recently converted a 6V Ford 8N to 12v. Everything was running fine and had no issues. Did all of the standard fluids while I was at it along with new spark plugs/battery. It s been in the garage for a week, went out to start it and could not get it to turn over, as soon as it would start to fire it would die and the starter would whine. I pulled the plugs and checked the battery, both seemed ok. My limited research is telling me it s the bendix on the starter. I pulled that today and it looks in good shape physically. Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Lonnie

Installing a ''locking'' starter drive will solve the ''kicking out'' part of the poor starting issue.

Hello Lonnie welcome to YT! Sorry, but adding you to
the list of new users that throws out some confusing
terminology. You say ..cannot get it to turn over.. in
most folks way of understanding that means the
starter will not turn the engine as in to equal the old
days of the hand crank. But it sounds like the starter is
cranking the engine and several cylinders fire but it
does not keep running and then you hear the starter
coasting to a stop. I am an IH guy not a Ford guy, but it
looks to me like you already have a ..locking style..
drive. In the link is the YT electrical parts offered for an
8N. Scroll down about 3/4 of the way and you will see
the two different drive options. The 1st one listed as
..improved design.. is the one wore out is referring to.
Your drive can look fine but the one-way clutch in it
may not hold like it should which can cause the
problem you are encountering. What else did you do
during the conversion, did you install an alternator or
electronic ignition?

I installed the kit offered by YT (includes alternator) is there a way to test the one way clutch? I apologize for my newbie terminology I am not a mechanic and have been learning from the net.

Not really other then grab it with a channel lock pliers
and trying to see if it catches properly every time it is
turned in the direction the one way clutch applies. And
this is not a for sure test.

don't think this sounds like a starter problem. Look elsewhere.

As JMOR suggested, it is probably not a starter problem. it is firing JUST ONCE which gives it enough kick for the starter drive to disengage as it should. Check your gas and ignition.
