Farmall super a misfiring

I have a Farmall super a number 1 cylinder is misfiring, but when I unplug the spark plug it runs perfectly fine, from what I understand this has to be something wrong with the timing right? Any ideas of what could be going wrong?

If pulling the spark plug wire off a bit but yet letting the spark jump to the plug that means the spark plug it self is likely to be going bad or fouled. 2 way ti make sure of that is get a new plug and put it in or move the plug to say #4 and put the #4 plug in #1 and see if the problem follows the plug

What does it do when you pull off number 4 plug wire? If it does nothing then you are just balancing out ..if you want to call it that.. the cylinder firing. That means that cylinder 4 is your actual problem. I cannot imagine it sounding much different than a John Deere 2 cylinder at that point. If your number one intake valve is being held open due to the lash has went to zero or is not sealing that may cause the engine to sound better when the cylinder is not firing, I am referring to number 1. A valve clearance check followed with a compression test would assess the mechanical functions of the engine are up to par.

Okay Ill try that out, Im not at the tractor right now but Ill post when I do try it. Also when it misfires it comes out the intake, would that mean it is coming out the intake valve?

That could mean a valve that sticks once in a while. I'd try mixing 1 quart of ATF into 3 gal of gas and run it that way.

You say removing the wire completely makes it run better?

Or pulling it off and holding the wire close to the plug but still arcing to the plug makes that cylinder fire?

If removing the wire completely makes it run better, look for a wet or carbon tracked distributor cap.

If pulling it back just a little makes the cylinder hit, then look for a partially fouled plug or weak spark to the plug, as in closed up points, bad plug wire, bad or wrong coil, or bad cap and rotor.

Yes removing it completely makes it run better, if I let it ark on the spark plug it will start to misfire again, okay Ill check it out.

Can't make it run better but can make it sound like it is better. No plug wire hooked up means you have more then 25% less power
