Howdy

I have a '63 MF 50. I did a nice restoration 10 yrs ago. It's great old gal. I need to replace the governor. I've tried most of the simple things. I'm getting tired of holding the throttle lever.
Can anyone recommend a good mechanic ? I live on the MD/PA border in Baltimore County.

thanks

What, exactly, is going on? Possibly, the
friction pads that keep the throttle
lever in position need to have the
tension on them adjusted or need to be
replaced? Or, is something else going on
with the governor besides the unintended
lever movement?

Hi
I replaced the pad and tightened the spring. That helped a little but it keeps walking back down to ~1600rpm if I take my hand off the lever. It will stay at any setting under 1600rpm just fine.

It's not the governor, it's some sort of linkage issue. Take a look at the link below (I'm NOT sure if that's correct for the serial number/age of your tractor).

If it IS, look at Key #'s 22 and 23, governor compensator spring and link. Are they present and functional? perhaps someone has substituted a ''weaker'' spring?

Many tractors have a similar setup, the linkage is set up so that spring comes into play as you advance the throttle lever, providing a counter force to the tendency of the throttle lever to work it's way ''down'' from higher throttle settings.

Hi there Danbo456. I am a long time mechanic and love what I do. I have a tremendous craving for old tractors and mechanics in general. First of all I work 40 + hrs for a company that does steel erection. The rest of the time is spent in my own shop called Breezy Hill Engine Service. We are located 2 miles west of the Chester County line on RT. 340/Old Philadelphia Pike. If it makes a difference, we are Amish, and can relate to the old timers. You can look up my business online if you want and give me a call. I would be delighted to work on your tractor for you. The location is a little small, so I would park your unit outside under a carport if you like. Cheers Sam Ebersol
