Farmall M Live Hydraulic Pump

Rebuilding a Farmall M and would like to start it up. We havent redone all the hydraulics yet. Can the live hydraulic pump located near the front crankcase cover be run without hydraulic lines attached or does the pump require hydraulic fluid. I believe the pump to be an MandW. Steiner tractor makes one that matches it almost perfectly.

Hello WH welcome to YT! I agree with old. But if you have two pieces of hose you can fit on the pump and tie them looped up to stay above the pump with a tee between them so you can put oil in them you can run it. You cannot fill it completely full and cap it tightly because the oil will expand as it warms. So figure on capping it loosely and place a ..catch can.. to catch any drips from the loose cap. Is this a used pump from Steiner? I believe it would have to be if it is actually a M&W pump. I may be wrong but I do not think reproduction M&W pumps are available. For future reference I you come back here with more Farmall questions YT has a topic section specifically for Farmall and IH machines. I would recommend you place future post on red tractors over there, see link.

The pump was on there when my son got the tractor. It was his great grandfathers and he is working on restoring it. He is 14 so Im helping along the way.

It was obviously added at some point along the line but grandpa is long past and Im not sure when or by who.

Im the end we would like to have a remote with live hydraulics we were just trying to figure out ways to break the tractor into peices to complete the resoration and hydraulics was lower on our list. Ill probably try your hose idea. This would allow us to test the engine items before having to hook up all the hydraulics.

Okay sounds good. Does your pump look somewhat like the one in the post I am linking? A bit down there If so you have a pump that would have been installed on the later Super Ms. That article just happened to come up when I searched for a picture just for reference. The hoses on yours may not go into a block as shown some variations had hoses that screwed right into the bottom of the pump. That was all dependent on the manufacturer of the pump there were 3 different ones. Many Ms were upgraded with these pumps. What happened to the hoses valves fitting and reservoir that it was connected to at one time?
