I have a John Deere B that had a unreadable serial number plate. So I got a propane torch, a Scotch-Brite scrubber, and a wet rag. I first went over the plate LIGHTLY with the torch to bake off the grease and grime. If you get the plate to hot it will warp/melt, which you don't want. I then commenced in a hours worth of scrubbing every 10 minutes I would wipe it off with the rag. I got all of the stuff stuck off and wiped it off with the rag, dried it, got a fresh scrubber and polished it to a high shine. I then gave it a light mist of WD-40 to keep it from rusting. If anyone is interested the SN was 138090, which might be 43 or 44. I've found conflicting info on JD B serials.
