I have a Massey Harris 44 (diesel engine before)with a 1990

Chevy 390 gas engine in it. It has been running great until

recently,, "searching " for reverse and got it stuck in higher gear.

Any tips on getting it unstuck and fixing the problem? TIA

Hello gg welcome to YT! Your engine is rarer than your
tractor Chevy never made a 390, but Ford did. Is your
engine a V-8 or 6 cylinder? If it is a six you may be
thinking of a 292 truck engine. If you had a Farmall I
could tell you exactly what to do about your gear
problem, but since you have a MH I better let someone
in the know chime in. There are a couple MH owners
on here that post regularly one should pop in soon.

Thanks for the reply. :+)

I bought the tractor years ago used and was told it was a 1990

390 Chevy and is a V8. Lots of oil pressure and is a V8 dual

exhaust out the top ,, lots of snort.

Your shifter may be worn and passed the rail notch. You can remove the shifter and by using a long rod or screwdriver slide the
rails back to neutral. My. 22 and 44 both had this issue. The fix is to have the shifter built up and reshaped.

Thanks very much but I already pulled the shifter out and then I

made a blunder ,,by what you have told me .. I put it back in and

now it is stuck,, at a strange angle ,, and a lower gear evidenced

by starting and easing out the clutch ,,and now,can t get the

shifter out.

gg digging myself in deeper. :+(

So, to clarify, your shifter is stuck down in the transmission, and you are not able to pry it out of it's hole? Can you unbolt and take the top off the tranny? That will do two things: free up the shifter, and let you figure out which shift rail is out of position. Once you have it apart, I would move the rails back and forth and make sure they snap into a detent at the end of their travel. If not, you need to take the caps off the detent springs and balls, and probably replace some broken detent springs. Then look over the end of the shift lever to see if you can identify if it is badly worn. I'd put my money on broken detent springs, and then the worn shift lever. steve

Your first sentence,,yes.

Second sentence yes,, but the plate is below by a few inches

and shifter is above on the transmission housing. The shifter,,

when sitting on tractor looking down is to the right side on top of

transmission,, and the plate is in front of that ,, down and

centered but not directly in front of shifter . The plate cover is 6

or seven inches square.

So taking that plate off is next step,, I guess ,, then back and

forth with the rails to maybe get the shifter out and then get

shifter in .Going to the bush tomorrow so will be isolated for a

few days ,, thanks for your help.
