Farmall Super a backfiring

I recently got an old 54 Farmall super a running, but Im getting a backfire from one of the cylinders, it has new spark plugs and New carburetor and Ive redone the valve timing so I dont think its any of those, what else could be causing this? Is it a timing issue? I also have a video.

ASSUMING the valve lash is set correctly it could be a sticky valve or a valve that isn't seating.

Have you done a compression test, or, even better, a cylinder ''leakdown test'' which would show EXACTLY what's going on.

What is your definition of ..valve timing? To most mechanics that means installing the camshaft drive gear in the proper time with the crankshaft gear. I agree with wore out a sticking valve or one that is not seating properly.

Check the ignition timing.we bought a M at auction that just didn't run quite right. 4 new tires, new gas tank and paint. The problem was he had two plug wires crossed.

A true ..cylinder leak down test.. requires a special tester, see link. It is helpful to determine if the valves are leaking, and if so which one in the cylinder is leaking. In my opinion a compression test will give you plenty of information for a Farmall A.

Backfire covers a lot of symptoms.

An occasional sneeze back out the carb, especially when accelerating, can be lean mixture, retarded timing, or ignition problems.

Exhaust backfires are usually ignition related, arcing points, intermittent spark.

Rhythmic popping back out the carb, worse under load, is an exhaust valve failing to open, usually from a flat cam, or bent or dislocated pushrod.
