300 Utility with power steering plug out

New User
I am a new owner of a 300 Utility with power steering.
28183 SJ C-169
I found a plug sitting below the power steering unit.
Part number 172 580 Number 40 I think.
It does not have threads so it must be pressure fit.
There are leaks in the area which I am researching.
Does this hold fluid? How do I keep it sealed?

Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.
Mel

buy a new plug and install it and done. use the old one if its ok. these plugs need to be hit in the centre to make them seal. make sure the
surface is clean and use blue locktite. looks like someone was into that unit and it was not installed correctly.

Those are standard flat type expansion plugs, any real auto supply should have them.

Take the old plug with you so they can measure it.

Clean the seat area well, remove all oil and grit. Put some sealer on the seat area, like Locktite or Permatex.

The object is to seat the new plug fully against the stop in the hole, then use something round and flat on the end, about the same size as the plug but not bigger, then gently tap until the plug is flat and fully expanded in the hole. Do not go beyond flat.

Good luck on getting that in position and sealed if you don't take the unit out as there is little room to work. I filled mine with corn head grease as thin as I could find and seems to be holding.

Hello Mel welcome to YT! I made a request on the
Tractor Talk section here for a poster Janicholson who
is familiar with these machines to give his approach. I
am surprised he did not reply here. Here is what he
replied ..Under the housing the welsh plug hole needs
to be pretty spotless. Small wire brush is good. There
should be Permatex #2 (non-hardening) put on the rim
of the new plug. The plug is inserted to the ridge, then
punched or hammered till flat. This expand the plug
into the bore. Wipe up excess goo with alcohol. Jim..
