Ford 2000 transmission problem

1968 Ford 2000 3 cyl gas 4 speed . After getting tractor running and usable I only have reverse, 1st, and 3rd gears. Will not shift in 2nd or 4th. Is there something I can do from top of transmission? I do not want to separate tractor.

Opening the top would be the first step.

When you say it will not shift, do you mean the shift lever is locked and will not move, or it shifts and does not drive?

If it's locked and will not shift, and it's been parked for a while, chances are it's just rusted up. An oil change, good soaking with penetrating oil, and gentle persuasion with a soft hammer and prybar should get the shift rails moving.

If it shifts but does not drive, something is broken. Should be obvious once it's open. But if it's broken, good chance it will have to be split to repair it.

I'm the 3rd owner. I bought tractor which had been in his barn for 15 years. I got it running and changed several things that needed attention. I talked to the one I got the tractor from. He said it was that way when he bought it. He said that it wasn't a big deal for him. It worked fine for him. 3 years later he bought a new tractor and parked the old tractor in his barn. After getting it running and could use it. I decided to look into why it will not go in 2nd or 4th gears. I changed all the oils after I got it running. The old tractor does what I need. I'll pull cover off and see if I can see the problem. Thanks for the info.
