Clutch wont disengage

I recently replaced the clutch on my 69 Ford 2000 with a 4sp and single stage clutch. Put it all back together and now the clutch wont disengage. Pressure plate was torqued to 18 ft lbs, clutch Im sure is in the right way. I adjusted the pedal to spec. Any ideas? Im really not looking forward to splitting it again

Disk in backwards will cause that. I learned that the hard wa when I was 17 or 18 working on a GMC pickup. Another thing could be one of the pins has broken in the clutch linkage. One at the out side on the shaft the throw out bearing is on and the one on the side where the throw out bearing mounts to the arm. Or you could have a bad pilot bearing so the input shaft keeps spinning

How easy did it stab back together?

Easy to damage a clutch or pilot bearing during reassembly.

Letting the engine weight hang on the input shaft can damage the disc. So can forcing it together with bolts. Theoretically, it should mate up with only hand force. I know that rarely happens, but using excess force will damage one.

Could be a defective pressure plate. If it offers no release at all, that would be my next assumption. Dragging, failure to fully release or chatter can be a warped pressure plate. It should be tightened down very gradually in a criss-cross pattern.

Good idea to test fit the disc on the input shaft before installing it. If the disc will not slide freely on the spline, it won't release.

How long ago was it assembled? If it sat more than a week or so it might be rust stuck. The new disc material is more prone to stick. It can happen quick in a high humidity environment.

It was probably about a week or so, its in my pole barn that isnt temp controlled and its been awful humid here. Putting it back together went I guess about as well as would be expected with a guy doing it for the first time, I didnt cinch it together with the bolts till it was only about a 1/4 gap around the split. Nothing besides hands were used getting it back together, but I guess it wouldnt be out of the question to think one of the heaves to get it together hit the pilot bearing. I read somewhere some of these tractors had a spacer between the pressure plate and the flywheel. I sure dont remember taking any out though. Looking like itll need to get split again to check everything out. Ill get back at it in a couple days after the frustration wears down a bit, this project has been testing to say the least.

While it is a pain, you can avoid this sort of problem by measuring from the engine mounting surface back to the clutch finger surface, and then from the bell housing mating surface back to the release bearing surface in order to see how they are going to come together.
