wondering if I'm better off rebuilding my perkins or powering with a cummins. not sure how much money either way would cost me. thoughts?
also what would be the best place to look for a cummins and would it be any 6bt or are there specific ones to look for?
thanks

I should also mention that the reason I ask is the perkins in it now looks to be blowing oil out the front cylinder. Ive tried marvel mystery oil (couple quarts) in the crankcase and run it for a couple hours under light load and it hasn't freed up. afraid of spinning a bearing so figuring ill have to tear into it. 5000 hours on motor

In all honesty, about the cheapest way to go is to buy a Perkins out of a combine. You can find them with just a few thousand hours on them for less than the cost of a rebuild. It'll give you a lower hour injector pump and all. The availability of those engines for the price has practically made them a throw away engine.

Yes and no. It's an easy enough swap, but all you basically use from the combine is the block, internal parts and head. You'll have to use the tractor front cover, balancer, pan, manifolds rear side cover, injector lines, throttle linkages, water pump, flywheel, etc. No big deal really. Just know that you can't take it right out of the combine and drop it in the tractor frame as is without swapping all that stuff over. I put one out of an 8700 White in my 1850 that had a Perkins. I even had to swap the oil pump tube because the filter and cooler plumbing were on the wrong side. That required taking out a plug from one side of the block and putting one back in the other side.

5000 is not a lot of hours for a 354 (unless it is 5000 on that tach, not to whole tractor), have you pulled the injector to make sure it isn't streaming?

I bought it used so not sure if its 5k on the whole tractor or just motor
how would i check that injector? I'm not too familiar with them. Also if it was the injector wouldn't the oil loss be a separate issue?
thanks
