Oliver 60 Hay baler

Hello,

I bought an old Oliver 60 hay baler as my first baler and I've run into a few problems. I probably should've steered clear of the Oliver baler given the lack of parts and product support but nevertheless here I am.

I'm having trouble getting the baler in time. I got the plunger and packer fingers timed perfectly but I'm having trouble with the knotter clutch and the needles.

I've positioned the plunger on the compression stroke so that the tips of the projections on the plunger face are 1/4 to 3/4 inch past the tip of the needles as the needles are sitting in the home position.

when I turn the flywheel the plunger face continues past the needles (without the needles moving) and then returns all the way back to the front of the baler and then once it is on the followigncompression stroke the needles begin to come up through the knotters but then they just sit there, they don't return to the home position, they don't seem to move at all when it's time for them to return home.

How do I time the knotter drive chain and the knotter clutch?

Any suggestions?

Old baler mechanic told me years ago if you replace a chain on a baler make sure it has the same number of links as the old chain had or it will never stay timed. Not sure if you have replaced any of the chains but if you have or you took out a link to added a link then there is likely to be your timing problem

Not familiar with that machine, but what you are describing sounds more like wear or slack in the linkage.

Just a guess...

It sounds to me like a needle drive problem as opposed to a timing problem. Once triggered the needles should go up and back down without stopping.
