hi guys I'm new to the forum here but have some issues with a 285 white. I have read some on other forums here, so clutch pressure should be 280? there are two lines going into clutch valve on the back which is clutch pressure? pto lever wants to kick off when running and pto quit on the mower, also pto spins when tractor is on. is pto clutch in the back? what would you advise I check first? I have never worked on a white so these are new to me, any help is appreciated!

I'd check the linkage. I've never seen anything as touchy as they are. Getting the adjustment just right so the PTO brake works and it'll stay engaged requires everything in the linkage to be tight and delicately adjusted. Unhook it at the lever on the housing and move that little lever from there. See if you can get it to stay engaged and if the PTO brake will work. If it does, start looking for play in the linkage from there back up to the lever on the console.

Does it have a cab? I have seen worn cab mounts that cause that linkage to move and disengage. Do like Lund said also or post back.

It is probably too late, but resist the temptation to turn the PTO all the way to off right away. Put it almost (you can feel it) off and let it coast down, then all the way back to engage the brake.

Thanks for your posts guys, it wasn't working right so I took the pto clutch apart, the pto brake clutch rivets were sheared off of the hub and the pto clutch plates were worn pretty good so got parts and its going back together, ill pay close attention to that linkage and try to get it adjusted right.
