Hey everyone! I've been trying t help out my grandfather with fixing his baby with no luck. It's a 1975 Ford 3000, rear wheel drive diesel. The problem is that when you are in low gear and try to reverse slowly it Hops or Rattles. At first I thought it might have been the brakes so I went ahead and replaced them with no luck in fixing the issue. My thoughts are now axle or diff. Prior to giving in and hauling it to a mechanic i would like to ask you guys for help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does it continue to hop with the clutch fully engaged?

Could be a broken tooth in the transmission. If it only does it in low and reverse, chances are it is not the differential or an axle.

If it only hops when feathering the clutch, could be a broken/warped pressure plate, or oily clutch disc.

Yes with the clutch fully engaged it continues to hop in the 1 wheel.

I tested it more today and found it only happens in high gear reverse. Low Reverse works fine.
