I have a Ford 8N that has been running pretty well until today. Today it started losing power and idling up and down on its own. It is acting like it wants to bog out and dies when a load or the PTO is engaged. The carburetor is a TSX241B

Any thoughts on what causes this?

Thank you

Need to do some basic diagnostics...

Check your point gap and check for side play in the distributor shaft. Check the spark quality at the plugs, should get a 1/4" blue spark to each plug.

Next check out the fuel system. Be sure the sediment screen is clean. Open the fuel valve with the bowl off, see if there is a strong fuel flow.

There is a drain plug in the bottom of the carb. With the engine off, fuel valve open, have a clean glass ready and pull the plug, catch the flow. It should have a full stream, then slow to a trickle, but not to a drip or stop. Look at what was caught in the glass. If there is trash or water, the same will be in the carb and in the tank.

If there is an inline filter, that can be a problem. The paper filters are not designed for gravity systems and can be too restrictive. If you want an inline filter, be sure it is a screen type made for gravity flow systems. There may also be a screen in the fuel inlet fitting on the carb. Be sure the fuel line is routed away from the exhaust as far as practical. Too close and it can cause vapor lock.

Also be sure the air filter is clear. There is a wire mesh inside the canister that is often over looked.

All of this seems to be good and in correct working order.

I worked one that was doing the some of the same one time it would idling up and down and found the shaft for the plate in the carb was starting to let air in. One time it would be good then would start running fast. Check and see if there is any play in it up and down and side to side. Also to find a leak there or any where is to spray some wd40 around the carb and intake manifold when it starts to run fast and if it slow down you found the air leak that been sucked it.
