1655 exhaust questions

Hi all Massey Ferguson gurus.I have been a member of your board a long time and restored a couple of mf 12,s on your knowledgeable posts.I have never posted before but can not seem to find the info I need on this one.I just purchased a mf1655 with 16 hp Onan engine it seems to run well but the hood gets hot enough to fry an egg.Is this normal. The muffler is located right up front under the hood was thinking of relocating it outside maybe vertical.Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks Summa

No personal experience, but pretty typical of air cooled tractors.

Something you might check, and I doubt there is any adjustment, but retarded ignition timing will cause high exhaust temps.

I would not go vertical with the exhaust. It would need to be really high to get it away from your face, then it will constantly be snagging trees, especially when mowing. Good chance it would get bent or broken, or break something else!

I've seen thin aluminum backed insulation in the HVAC dept at the big box stores. If you could secure that to the bottom of the hood it might help.

I repainted the hood of a tractor once that had paint burned on the hood. To protect the new paint I secured a piece of sheet metal under the hood over the exhaust.
