Post this down on the implement Forum or John Deere one and get TxJim to answer you. He is pretty good on JD wire tie balers. I have never worked on a wire tie just twine balers.

One thing I have done the last few times we have run the 224 WS (same twister as 246) is to add some engine oil
into the box of wire. About a 1/2 cup of oil in the middle of the coil made the 224 much happier.

Double the reply on the oil on the wire. I cut a small opening in the top of each box and pour used motor oil in and it coats the wire and help with problems. I had a lot of the same problems until an old timer told me that a few years ago. Went the rest of that first year without a problem.
Thin hay will also cause problems once in awhile, as well as when it tries to tie when you have pulled out of the windrow. But the oil or diesel fuel on the wire will eliminate many problems. My baler is a JD 336, fyi. Good luck - Bob
