Ih574 timing

Hi guys, i have a ih574 timing issue. It is, when #1 cyl is tdc and timing mark on wheel are lined up, the roter is 90 degs off to the left. Never looked at it before as the tractor seemed to run ok, but not great. So i have the timing cover off and need to align the roter to the numb 1 cyl. Do i need to pull the crank gear to do this?

Rotor as in this is a gas tractor?? If yes you maybe on TDC of the exhaust stroke and if so the rotor is pointing where it should be. Each cylinder has TDC twice in each of its 4 strokes.

thx old, so when the piston is in the firing stroke, then the rotor should be pointing to #1? Cause its not

With #1 spark plug out turn the engine over till the piston is at TDC. If the rotor is not pointing at the #1 on the cap turn it over till you have it at TDC again and then the rotor should point to #1. If it doesn't either time you have it way out of timing or you may have a bad distributor drive gear and it is slipping which will knock it out of time. Had that happen on a 340 we have

thx again old, so if the dist drive gear is wonky, can a new dist solve that, or do I need to get into the cam shaft?

If the distributor drive gear is bad it can be replaced or you can install a new or rebuilt one. Not likely to have to open it up and do other things. When that happened on the 340 I had problems even finding it because the rotor would turn with the cap off but not turn at times with the cap on which threw it out of timing and caused all sorts of odd problems. If it where me I would take the cap off and spin it over and watch the rotor and make sure it is spinning all the time. You also might want to double check point gap at all the lobes on the distributor since bad distributor bushings and cause firing problems and also timing problems

If it will actually RUN, the rotor is NOT 90? "off", in relation to firing #1 at or bear TDC, IMHO.

Sounds more like someone has "stabbed" the distributor in place in an other than the standard factory position, then moved the wires one nipple in the cap to compensate.

Nothing wrong with that, but it DOES confuse the next guy working on it a bit.

(That's YOU!)

are you saying the rotor does not need to point at #1 cyl at tdc?..I was getting spark, but intermittently at best. I checked gap and rechecked several times, put in new points, plugs, rotor, condenser, and wires,as well as cap. New fuel pump also. Gas is getting to plugs but like I said, I think spark and timing has to be the prob. The rotor being 90 degs off at exhaust or ignition strokes just seems to be the prob. Also timing marks on cam and eng block both line up at tdc. Ordered a new dist and crossing my fingers lol. Thanks for the help.

You say tractor runs but not great so the timing has to be at least close or it would not run at all. As for running rough does choking it hurt or help? When was the last time you serviced the air cleaner. Seen more then one where the person had not serviced the air cleaner and when I pulled the air cleaner off it ran as it should have. Also are you sure you have the firing order correct. An engine will run if you have a couple of plug wires on wrong but not run well.
