i have a fairly new 12 volt starter on a 1963 massey ferguson 65 that the drive gear came apart.my question is how to change the starter drive unite and is it a big job.thank you and all info or pictures are welcome.

I thought someone would have come along with specific instructions, but here goes...

Been a while since I've had that type starter apart. There is nothing difficult about it. Some are difficult to get off and on the engine, getting it past the distributor, but turn it just right it will come out.

As for taking the starter apart, the only thing to be careful of is to not pull the armature out and release the brushes. Even if that happens it's easy to get them back in place.

Best I recall there is a pin through the drive that holds it on the shaft. Once you get in there it will be obvious what needs to come apart.

When you get the new drive, compare it closely to the old one. If that is a "new" starter, that means it is a China/India replacement. The drive may be different, but let's hope not!

One other thing, don't spiral the new drive out. It will lock and be difficult to get back on the engine. If you do, no big deal, it will retract once the engine starts.
