Radiator repair on Ford tractor

Folks I posted this on the Ford tractor page as well to get advise/recommendations. I have a 1964 Ford 2000 tractor with a radiator leak. Question is would “Bar’s Stop Leak” or similar product fix this or do i need to learn how to solder?

Maybe...

That's a substantial leak.

Did the radiator get damaged, or did it just start leaking on it's own?

If it is damage, better chance it will stop the leak.

If it opened up on it's own, there will be little for the stop leak to attach to, chances are the leak will soon reappear, or move to the next weakest location. Time for a recore.

Perryjosh64 ,Have it soldered or you solder it,because the leak will keep coming back using stop leak.Fix it right the first time.

If the radiator has a leak chances are it has some more filled with debris where you can't see it. I think I would be inclined to have the radiator vatted and then check for leaks and professionally repaired.

ight on , Bob, as those that say otherwise just don't know how to do it themselves.

Well I hope so and I’m all about learning. However I have no experience soldering so advice appreciated. I’ve been googling/YouTubing how-videos/comments. Seen electric soldering irons, propane/map gas torches, full on welding torches, solder specialty rods plus “flux”, etc. etc. the one video of how to that seems simple was a feller with a handheld map torch and solder rod from autozone after he cleaned site with Dremel tool. So what is the simplest way for person with no experience to solder this?

Soldering isn't that difficult if you can get to the spot. You roughen up the metal and butter it up good with tinning flux and melt the solder in. Heat the metal up until it melts the solder.

Go ahead and laugh now. What is tinning flux? What kind (type/brand) of flux and solder rod recommended? Do I need a Map gas torch or a electric solder iron? Yes got to break it down to “soldering for dummies” level.

Flux is a stuff that is used to pretreat the area before you apply the solder. As for the solder you need acid core. The trick to soldering is clean, clean, clean.

Solder won't adhere very well without tinning flux. It's an acid which etches the metal. Perhaps someone knows a better brand for that application. I've always used Oatley flux like you use to sweat copper pipes. It's found in the plumbing section of your lumber company.

If you were soldering wires I would say use a soldering iron. For something as big as a radiator or a pipe you would need a torch with map gas to get it hot enough to do the job. If it has been repaired before you may have to heat the radiator and clean off the old solder, wire brush it and then start over.

Practice on something cheap. Small copper fittings wouldn't set you back too much. Along with knowing the technique, a little confidence in your ability is important.
