I just picked up a 1956 Allis Chalmers wd 45. Put a new battery in it. Tryed to start it and both cables melted. I thought that if it had the alternator change over it was a 12 volt negetive ground. Please help the old man who ones this was very important to me and I would like to use it.

Define "both cables melted".

If the insulated wires on both battery cables melted you have a pretty serious shorts.

Even getting the alternator polarity wrong wouldn't cause that.

Could be a shorted starter switch, a shorted starter, or the starter dive could simply be wedged into the ring gear.

As Bob said and or a bad starter or a jammed starter drive which in turn locks up the engine and starter. Or the cables are way to small for the load
