Ariens charging problem

I recently bought a used Ariens gt1 7 tractor with a Koehler engine. I must have left the key on while parked for about a week. I obviously drained the battery. How it will not hold a charge. Even after jumping it and having it run at a higher rpm, it will just shut off. I have only run the tractor a few brief times since purchasing it but never had any problems until I ran the battery dead. Any suggestions of what to look at? The battery was replaced this February and it appears to have a new coil.

Did you charge the battery, or just jump and run it?

The alternator will struggle to bring up a discharged battery, and could even damage the charging system.

See if the battery will take and hold a slow, full charge.

If it will, once running, check the charging system to be sure it is working.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the good sparkys below. FIRST try to charge the battery using a good quality charger (NOT too fast on such a small battery) and have it load tested after its stabilized and at rest, those onboard lawn tractor chargers wont hardly power a "rubber chicken". If it starts then you need to see if the onboard system keeps it charged, even though its not much it will keep it up if working. The battery may just be shot, but its worth a try to restore it.

I have the battery on a trickle charger while at work. The battery was new in February. My concerns is that it shut itself off after I had it running at a higher rpm. Voltage regulator maybe?

The ignition system is magneto, so not dependent on battery to run.

Some have a fuel shut off on the carb that needs "some" battery to hold it open, that could shut it down if the battery was really low.

But the charging system is essential to operate the PTO, as it is an electromagnetic clutch. Trying to run the mower deck, or any other PTO driven accessory with a low battery will slip the clutch, overheat it and likely destroy it.

There may be a low battery safety shut down feature to prevent that, but I've never seen one.

Once you get it running, put a volt meter across the battery. Running at full throttle it should show around 13-14v.

Once I get home I will try any and all suggestions. I appreciate the help!!
