1953 Jubilee Restoration

I am, shortly, going to overhaul both sets of bracks on my Ford Jubilee. It has a rather bad oil leak on the left side where the brake shaft exits the rear housing. The oil runs down the case and covers the rear exhaust pipe support. Does anyone have any experience with replacing that seal, and would I be wise to do it during the brake overhaul?

I haven't personally replaced the seals, but yes, they definitely need to be replaced before new brakes are installed. If one is leaking, the other can't be far behind.

Once brake shoes are oil soaked, they can never be fully dried out.

Also, check the oil level in the differential case. It could be over full and/or contaminated with water.

A shop manual would be a valuable investment. Will pay for itself many times over in mistakes not made!

Johnwp,What you are describing with your leak sounds like the #13 Expansion plug 1-1/4" is missing behind the brake shaft causing the oil to run out of the shaft hole.
