Massey Ferguson 65 rear axle

Not sure if I have a problem or not had to replace one side of the rear axle. The final drive and planetary gear the bearings and bushings where all chewed up. Ended up getting good final drive unit from a salvage and bolted it up. Everything felt good there was no slop. Had both tires jacked up off the ground and had no play on either side but.. when the tractor on the ground Jacks are out from under it. I can grab one or both sides and shake it and can't see much movement maybe 1/8th inch but I can feel it in my hands going back and forth on either tire. Is this normal for the rear end to feel that way.. I have only owned the tractor for about 3 weeks trying to get all the bugs out of it before I put it through some work.

There should not be end play on the axles.

The ends of the axles butt together, the bearings are adjusted by removing shims behind the retainer plates. You want to remove all end play, but not have preload.

Likely what happened, when the weight was applied, the bearing race pushed out against the retainer plate. It now just needs to be shimed in to where it will eliminate the end play.
