641 steering box rebuild

I'm trying to rebuild the steering box on my 1962 Ford 641 tractor. I've only had it for about 17 years and know nothing about it's former life. The steering suddenly developed about one half steering wheel play and was very loose. So, I pulled it apart and found the box filled with a dark muddy substance and loose parts. Pulled everything out...lower bearing shattered. Shaft had been welded in its life time. So all is cleaned up and parts ordered. My main question is the orientation of the metal box that contains all the ball bearings. I do have a shop manual from Jansels which is not the best for me anyway. The heavy metal box has a indentation on one end. Is this to face the top or bottom?
Thank you
