JD B Spark Plugs

The plugs in my JD B (S/N 80298) don't stay as clean as I think they should. I clean them and in not too long they accumulate an oily residue. The Autolite 3076 plug that is recommended is a cold plug. Would a hotter plug be more appropriate for the light use the tractor gets? Is there a hotter plug even available?

The deep reach side wire electrode Autolite 3077 runs a bit hotter and worked better for me. They made an equivalent AC but I don't have the number. They are much different then the cooler 3076, side wire electrode and real deep reach

NOTE those are 7/8 plugs NOT the smaller 18mm like Autolite Resistor 386 and 388 and the Non Resistor 3116

It helps to use shutters or t stats or curtains to get and keep the temp up to 170 and over

It helps to not run the carb any richer then necessary

It helps to use wire core NOT carbon core suppressor plug wires especially if its a Magneto ignition

Autolite 3077 is my advice for the bigger older 7/8 plugs. For the later tractors with smaller 18mm plugs I like 3116 NON Resistor

Keep the coolant at 200-210F , lean out the mixture and run straight 40 weight motor oil . More work and less stop-start putting around .

They have quit manufacturing the 3077 Autolite. Which was my favorite. But W89D is available in Champion which is the same heat range. They are available on Ebay.

The plugs are oil fouled. The engine was rebuilt by a previous owner and has probably only run a few hours since. I now have break-in oil in it (John Deere 10W30). I think the fact that the engine has not run much since being rebuilt contributes to the fowling. The other things that have been suggested could certainly be part of the problem as well.

I search ebay for everything and they have the worst prices on sparkplugs which can usually found at your local parts store. Rock auto has W89D for $7.22 each. This happens to be the plug for international gas start diesel engines of which I've had many. Champion does not make any other spark plug I would use even if free! chuck.

Thank you. The sparkplug can only do its job when all the conditions of the engine have been repaired .

Doesn’t matter what kind of spark plug it is . It will foul if the engine is burning oil , is too rich and is operating too cold .
Most spark plugs also have too short of a reach . The electrodes should be down in the combustion chamber instead of up above the bottom spark plug threads .
