how do i fix badly worn front axle pin??

in a few weeks I am going to overhaul the engine in my old dexta tractor and at same time I will fix front axle pin because it is badly worn and when I say badly worn the pin has worn through the bush and into the front axle so it will need building up somehow and machining out.... I am in UK and the engine parts are coming from trade supplier but I would like advice on fixing axle as I have never done this before, someone on this site surely has!!
thanks in advance

Yes, build it up with weld, rebore it to size.

The axle should weld well. They are either forged steel or ductile iron.

The repair doesn't have to be perfect, but needs enough to fully support the bushing so it doesn't break through into the worn area.

Typically the boring would be done in a mill. It could be done with a hand grinder, but weld is some tough stuff, best done with the proper equipment if at all possible.

This is what I had done to my MF FE 35 X Axel and Components:

I had Grease Nipples added.. Presently away for the winter so I have no Pictures:

Derwen1959,It is better to bore/mill the axle hole oversized and machine a steel bushing with the correct ID for the new brass bushing, and make the OD to fit the axle after milling it round again. Then weld the steel bushing into the axle on both sides, install the brass bushing and new pin.

Boring and sleeving it is an easier fix depending on how bad it's worn and how much "meat" is left on the bottom.

Thinning the bottom, even though the sleeve is welded, can weaken the axle considerably.

One other option would be to offset the bushing to the top so to minimize removal of material at the bottom, then bore back to the original location.

Hi Derwen, finishing off restoring a 1962 Dexta at the moment. Had the same fault as yours with the front axle pivot being worn so I welded a shafting collar to the axle fabrication and then fitted a new pin and bush. Hope you have not orderd your engine parts from Agriline beacause they just do not fit. MJ.
