To seal or not to seal tractor fuel tank?

I thought the fuel tank on my tractor was very rusty so pulled the tank off and pressure washed it in prep to seal it. After cleaning it it doesn't look so bad. I'm guessing a previous owner was filling it from a rusty tank. I already have the sealer so should I seal it anyway or would it be better to leave it as is and use the sealer for something else?

The last new tank I bought I put a fuel tank liner in it before I painted it and used it. If you can greatly extend the life of the gas tank with such an easy method, why not.

I wasn't sure if you are talking gas or diesel but just FYI a while back when I was working on my tractor I couldn't find a liner that said it would resist biodiesel. Since I didn't really need it I decided not to use something that may not work with what fuel may be available in a few years. But I may have been overly cautious.

That sealer can cause more problems if not applied correctly. If your tank is clean inside now, leave it alone. The ONLY reason to use the sealer is IF there are pinholes.

I wouldn't seal it. I know guys that sealed their tanks twenty years ago and now have trouble with the sealer flaking off and plugging things up.

I would replace the fuel line and install a good inline filter and all will be fine.

I?d rinse it good, then screw the sediment bowl (inlet)out of the tank and install a rinser in it that is about 1/2 to 3/4 above the bottom of the tank so sediments aren?t drawn off the bottom of the tank!!!

I wouldn't seal the tank if I were you. I have dealt with sealed tanks on two different tractors. I have concluded that making proper repairs is the way to go. For any tractor in use with lots of fuel in the tank they last and last.

There is nothing wrong with tank sealer if it is done right. I have a f 20 that was sealed with a sealer over 30 years ago and have not had any trouble with it. The main reason most have trouble with sealer is that they don't get tank clean and dry.

I have always sealed the gas tanks on tractors when I restore/refurbish them regardless of condition. As others have mentioned the prep work is the most important part of the process.
Over the last 18 years, I have never had a problem with one that I sealed.
