885DB transmission

What started as a clutch repair has expanded. Once the trans top was off it could seen that during a previous repair the top had been installed with the right hand shifters ball end out of its aluminum socket on the forward/reverse shift rail. The ball made contact with one of the gears, damaging the ball. The now damaged ball served to eat up the inside of the shift rail sockets. One is nearly worn through.

Guess now, while the tractor is split, is the time to fix it. I can see it is a cartridge type set-up but have no idea how to proceed. Suggestions please!

I have an 880 here with some bad gears, don't know if I have any parts you need but I am going to junk it. I could not see spending anything on mine, even though it has a good engine.

Same trans? I am interested in both rails and the shift tower. If my terminology doesn't make sense let me know and I'll look for a shop/parts book for correct terms. It is the right side shifter and rails, it is the side the forward/reverse is on.

(quoted from post at 09:22:55 03/26/18) Scott, I have a service manual and parts manual. Will look for you.

Super that'd help a bunch. In looking at the transmission... is the front plate removable without yanking the entire assembly? Only need enough room to slide the shift rails enough to clear at their ends.

(quoted from post at 09:43:42 03/26/18) Do you have yours out. I would have to take this apart.

No. Is yours still in the tractor too? Once I had my tractor split and saw there was yet another unexpected issue... this time in the transmission, I knew I needed a break from working on it. Trying to get this thing ready for spring has been one frustration after another. Could also see the need to obtain service info before proceeding. If there's a short cut to R&Ring the two shift rails short of removing the trans I would be keen to hear about it.

I am in middle of the Piedmont section of NC. What's the chance you are in the neighborhood?

I tried to PM you but that option is disabled. My work email is [email protected]. Give a shout and I'll email you from home this evening.

If I might double dip by asking another question regarding the splitting of the tractor; the PTO shaft seems to be hung in the pilot bearing. The sections are several inches apart. I pulled the PP, floater plate and checked that the PTO disk is free. Have not applied any force because the PTO shaft is moving forward with the front of the tractor and I didn't know if this was normal.

Ran into the input shaft stuck-in-the-pilot-bearing during a tractor split many moons ago. Wound up having the bearing pull out of the crank on that one. Cut the bearing off with an abrasive wheel.

Mine is the 3 cyl engine with the 3 spd. tranny with hi/lo. I had not wanted to split it until I may have sold the engine or some such. We had the top off this one at another man,s shop and stuck it and steering on to pull it home. I am in Ky. [email protected]
