John Deere 430T

The steering on my 1960 430T has a full 360 of play, I have looked at the worm gear at the top of the steering and looks to be moving with steering movement, I am guessing something a little deeper in the steering gearbox.

Has anyone been down this path before ?

Thanks

I just rebuilt the steering on my 40 and the 430 is similar. The steering shaft has two pins that ride in the worm gear. These pins are probably very worn. my 40 had two bushing just under the gear box that were worn out and the shaft was very worn where it turned in the bushings. There is also a bushing at the bottom which was worn on mine but I did not replace it because it was hard to get to. I found an NOS shaft and replaced the two top bushings and both seals in the gearbox and removed 80 percent of the slop. Steiners sells bushing and replacement pins if your shaft is not worn out and they have a video on youtube showing how to rebuild the steering box.

Thanks for the feedback, do you have to take the steering off the tractor to replace the bushings or can you disassemble it from the top?

there are two knobs on the top of the steering arm that engage the worm gear .
I welded two new steering knobs onto my tractor and they both snapped off in less than 5 hours .
The half moon key, the clamping collar on the end of the steering shaft and the keyway in the worm gear shaft are usually all wallowed to bits.

On a T I would be looking at the coupling under the steering box. My guess is that's what failed. You can download the parts manual free from jdparts and see it in the
diagrams.

remove the gearbox on top and remove the long shaft. Two bushings are in there and a seal out the bottom and a seal on the input shaft. Check out the video at Steiners, it shows the whole process.

Is this coupling that you are referring to that could be worn, I have attached a pic with the coupling that I think you referring to circled in blue? I am guessing that this is the coupling were the 2 shafts intersect.

I have now torn don the steering, everything up top looks ok, the upper spindle shaft appears to have the upper portion of the splines worn wear it goes into the coupling, some pics below for some feedback. Is the spindle something that can be found that is in good condition or is there another trick that someone has done that tightens up the coupling and the spindle.

Thanks for all the feedback.
