I can get engine to run fairly good while timing engine but when I tighten clamps starts running rough and onslow idle will die sometimes what could be the problem

Not knowing the magneto or engine or mounting I cant say HOWEVER Ive seen plenty of tractors with certain mag mounts and drives that when tightened down too much it put too much pressure on the impulse drive/coupling assembly disabling it. On some tractors and some mags it took an extra gasket between mag and engine (or maybe one is missing??) to make them work right and NOT be too tight. I have no other ideas maybe other gents who know the mag and engine can help out. For example some Wico mags use short mount drive lugs and others long ????

We have a "B" Allis Chalmers with the FMJ Mag, and it will not snap correctly with only one gasket. I use 2 and it is ok.

Ive seen that happen IE its too tight up against the drive coupling which 2 gaskets or maybe leave it a bit loose cures
