How do I get these Drain/Fill Plugs Off

Hi All.....I have an H with the wide front end. It has a couple large threaded Plugs for draining and filling fluids. My Question's are ?? Is their a set of Tools that are designed to fit into the Square area on these plugs? What are these Plugs called so I can Google it??.
I'm new at this Tractor ownership and none of my Maintenance books for the H refer to these plugs....Thank you.. Ron

They are usually square head plugs but can be socket pipe plugs. The threads are tapered so they will seal. Sometimes very hard to take out. An adjustable wrench will work on the larger ones but often slip on smaller ones. Eight-point sockets are best. Are they like these?

Yes...some of them are about an Inch an 3/4
or a little smaller. Is there a tool set for these do you know?.
And thank you for your reply...Ron

Hi Mike...I'm going outside now before we
get our Big 18 inch dumping of Snow and get you a photo
of that threaded Plug.

google pipe plug sockets. lots of em on amazon. grey pneumatics makes em and sunnex too. i just posted a pic up in tool talk of the smaller
set.

My photo upload of that Pipe Plug did not
upload, I suspect that it exceeded the file Size of 300K. I was going to send you an Email with my attachment but your email addr. is
not shown. So apparently the Pipe Plug is being used and I will have to shop for the Correct Male size that will fit into. Thanks for your help....Ron

Are you talking the square head male or the square head female type plugs?? If male one can use a 12 point socket on them if female use a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket wrench extension in them and a socket wrench

You can use a large crescent wrench or pipe wrench but bee careful. The have a tendency to slip on the taper of the head. You can also get away with a 12-pooint socket. Use the one that fits tightest and still goes all the way on. A tap with a small hammers helps keep it in place.

Square-Head Male Socket has to fit Inside
the Female square area in that Plug.
I will have to Measure the inside Square-Head area.

Being female it is a simple take a socket extension and stick it in. They will be either 3/8 or 1/2 and maybe 3/4 inch but the 3/4 is not very likely. I have never had a problem doing it with an extension and socket wrench

Excellent feed back, thank you. I do believe I have the Socket Drive and the extension that might work. The opening on the Female Plug looks to be pretty large. I will check it.

Reason I say to use an extension is because many of those plugs sit where just a socket wrench will fit but you have little to no room to turn it. In all my years of messing with engines etc. I have only come across 1 or 2 that used a 3/4 inch extension so very likely if your is big it is a 1/2 inch drive size

I guess I missed the female part . yes those sometime can be intersting . was working an a David Brown last summer with square female plugs but nothing would fit 3/8 was to small half was to big

Very valuable information that you have provided me. I won't find that type of experience in any H manual!! appreciate you sharing your Life Tractor Lessons.. Ron

here a pic of one of my sets of pipe plug sockets. these are gray pneumatics, pn gp1211p about 40 dollars on amazon. they also have larger
sets.

You had one of those odd ball 5/8 ones. For the odd balls I look around in my bolt ben and find a square head bolt that fits and then double nut it and use it to pull the plug

I have not had so much as 1 hour of schooling to teach me how to be a mechanic I learned every thing by the road of hard knocks and books. I learned years ago hands on many times if better then any school room is and I am more then happy to help if and when I can

Old has it right, very few do not fit a 3/8, 1/2 or 3/4 socket extension or even 1". Before you twist on it make sure all the grease and dirt is out of the square hole you put the extension into. You want the extension to go in all the way as the square hole is usually fairly shallow. It doesn't help to push the extension firmly into the hole as you twist. I have sometimes had to grind the end of the socket extension perfectly flat to get it up in the hole far enough to get a good bite. You do not want to round it off.

(quoted from post at 16:06:28 03/16/18) That also works or one can buy square stock in the correct size and use that
Thank you All for your comments to my Post about that metal Pipe Plug. I did find the Correct 3/4" Male plug for my 1/2 socket drive not bad for $6.35.
The plug came out without any Arguing!!....Ron (Maine)

A lot of times one over thinks thing and that is where it gets hard. We tend to think to much about how to do this or that instead of just jumping in and trying a few things
