Flushing the Transmission/rear end - Lessons learned

Been restoring tractors for many years. As you know, most of them that have been sitting outside have water in the gearbox/differential. I used to flush out the mess with diesel oil.Recently acquired a 1957 John Deere 420W, which had the usual goop come out of gearbox drain plug. I had an old bucket of universal hydraulic fluid in the shop, and figured it would make a good flush. So in it went, drove around for a few minutes and drained it out. Replaced with the proper amount of GL-5 gear lube. Maybe one hour of use....checked the fluid level and it was so foamed up that it ran over the top of the fill plug. So obviously I didn't get all the hydraulic fluid (and maybe water) out of the diff.
Picture below is after the draining out the NEW GL-5.
Lesson leanred:
1. UTF probably not a good flush for a gearbox that uses gear lube.
2. In the case of water contamination, you may not get all of it the first time around.

I agree with use of fuel. You can ask only so much of a flush, because if the use of a tractor slowly tapers off over years, the sludge tends to not only get thick but also hardens up, requiring scraping to free it up. It takes some volume to do it right but it works
