I inherited an 1650 diesel from the father inlaw. When I got it would not shift into 5th or 6th, it would just grind. Since all I use it for is to blade the quarter mile driveway It didn't matter. Well this winter now 3rd, 4th and R2 will no longer work. What could be happening and how in depth of a repair am I looking at?

Could possibly be a fork or shift rail. You'll have to take the top off the transmission and rear end. You'll need to take off the seat and platform, take out a few dozen bolts around the top, including two long ones, one on either side of the filter.
The entire rockshaft and everything comes with it. There's an oil pan under it and that can be a sticky situation. There's a gasket on either side of it,but in addition to that, there are two dowels in opposite corners. One will want to come with the top cover and the other will want to stay in the lower housing. The pan will be pinned down in between,so when you get it up an inch or so,you'll have to work one or the other of them out of the housing it's stuck in.

Once you get that off,the problem should be right out in the open and obvious to you.

I had a broken shifter rail in my 1550 and found it by just taking the shift tower off. You may be able to see something wrong with the forks from there. 1650 uses a helical gear transmission so it could be a problem with a shift collar.
