Greetings
Needs your assistance in Restoring my JD
First found out prior owner lost the undercover of PTO as result massive amount of dry dirt mixed with oil
How can I clean It and if that hinder the turning of the shaft
Second all manuals for that year S number 21T9331 show 24V positive ground this one is 12V and dont know if its positive or negative ground
I did service cleaning and replacing filters timed injection pump etc and ready to fire but holding on battery connection I cant tell from the old battery as it has none
Thank you all and god bless

all John Deere diesels until 1969 that I am aware of were 24 volt (electric start) if it is 12 volt, it has been converted, probably neg.
ground. Does it have an alternator or generator?

Thanks for the reply it has old generator and Delco regulator 12v as the ground on the side not on top
The old owner son stated that they started it on both positive and negative grounds but cant remmber which his dad set it up the starter is rebuild

If it has two battery cables going to the starter...one to the solenoid and one to the side of the starter..it's probably a 24 Volt.

If it's been converted to 12 volt it will just have one battery cable going to the starter solenoid. Usually a 12 volt conversion will have an alternator...but I suppose it is possible to install a 12 volt generator and regulator.

It sounds like you're talking about the clutch housing bottom cover...unless it's the round shaft covers for the pto out-put shafts

Its 12v with gen and regulator and not alternator I am taking all wiring out for replacement as well all gages to make sure everything is ground good and give chance to paint too
As far as the bottom cover its directly under the handle to engage the PTO left side as 4020 on the right side that hole got shaft and two round disks that loose and the shifter when engaged it cover them and it has two grease points The hole is full of dry hard dirt mixed with grease or oil
What can I use to clean the hole to check on the gears and shaft can I use pressure washer or that too strong as after pressure washing the outside oil start coming around the seal on the PTO front shaft

Oh! I understand which cover you're talking about...it's under the steering valve in the dash.

If you pressure wash in there all the crud and water will go down the hole into the clutch housing. Probably best to hand dig as much junk out as possible...then maybe blow it out with air or pressure wash.

If you pressure wash the inside dash area maybe a good idea to take the clutch cover plate off the bottom of the tractor so water can get out. I washed the crud out of my 4010 dash area and liked to filled my clutch housing with water and dirt! Was squirting water out the timing hole covr when I started it...

I think there is supposed to be a foam seal that works with the cover on the rod to seal the pto hole...

(quoted from post at 19:04:30 02/07/18) Just use a paint scraper and shop vac to clean out the dirt. Avoid water.
Thank you for the reply we did manage to take Most of it as stated we did conclude all rewiring took the injunction pump out and took it apart to rebuild it and after ordering all parts we found big crack on the bottom of the housing near the shaft
Can we change the pump with another from 4020 as found one for $400 and rebuild it and ready to be installed I will start new threads of the steps with photos may help someone thank you all for your help
