Fuel pipe question

Hi

I'm new to the forum, and new to tractors.

I've just bought myself a 35x last week.

I am hoping someone will be kind enough to answer a question

Since buying it I have noticed that the pipe that runs from the filter to the reservoir has been crimped flat.

I guess this was done because the junction it connects to leaks !

I understand this tube takes filtered fuel to the reservoir to power a cold start heater.

The tractor starts OK.

Do I need to be worried about this crimped/blocked tube.

I understand when you turn the key anti-clockwise you energise
an electric glow heater.

Where/what exactly does the reservoir do.

Is it possible if the tank is full, for fuel to flow out of tank into reservoir overflow. (ie can you over fill the tank?)

Trying to work out where the leaking fuel is coming from.
-not from filter as pipe crimped
-possibly from main fuel tank via reservoir (which maybe is why
I didn't notice leak when I bought it as tank was almost empty)
- or from the other pipe, the "leak off pipe" - that pipes a bit of a mystery to me

Any help would be gratefully received, and apologies for my ignorance. This is my first experience of a diesel engine..

Thanks

Matt

If the line is kinked that much it needs to be replaced. Not only could it starve the tractor of fuel it might split open and leak at any time.

The Thermostart intake manifold heaters need a small reservoir to supply them with fuel, if used with no fuel present the coils will burn up. Usually the filter overflow bleed orifice line fills the reservoir first and any excess then goes back to the main tank. My TO-35 with the Standard Motors 23C starts best cold with 14 seconds pre-heat.

Thanks for the really helpful responses. I didn't realise the
pre-heater used fuel as well as current.

I realise I have to fix the leak as a priority, but am curious about the leak-off pipe. Should this provide enough fuel for the starter even with the pipe form the filter clamped shut

Should the glow plug still work as a heater without fuel, even with risk of frying the element

It is a Massey Ferguson 35x 1964

In England where I live if doesn't often freeze, and I bought the tractor to cut a meadow, so don't intend to use much in winter

In picture you can see see the leak, fixed with bubblegum and bits of twisted wire, and the pipe crimp, under the battery lead

The picture is rather big cont+ and cont- will resize it.
