I.H 784 won't start

Hi all, have a problem starting, have already posted about this on the crankshaft bearings problem thread but thought I should start a new thread, after sorting out the bearing problem, it seemed to be a new starter motor needed,so replaced it, but the engine only turned over slowly a few times then the battery ran down, I replaced the battery with a new one (664), and it still only turns the engine slowly a few times before going flat!!!, anyone know the right battery or best battery to use??, or could it be something more sinister??, any helpful hints or tips would be welcome.

The 784 battery area is pretty large and therefore you can get something with 600-700 CCA's in there without a problem. Get as many CCA's as you can. Make sure you have heavy cables with the fused on ends, not the clamp on's. Cables at least 1/0 or 2/0. If that is not your problem it is something more sinister.

Have 844 and used for many years in winter. I use a 1000 cca battery. Just bought a decent
new starter off Ebay. Have couple older Bosch ones and they have been rebuilt one too many
times and are worn out. Mine has the D239 motor.

i Shaler thanks for your reply, the battery is new today cca is 800 & the terminals are clamp on not sure what gauge though, tractor is tucked up in the barn for the night freezing cold with snow & strong winds don't think I will be venturing out there anymore until tomorrow!!!, will have another look then, perhaps give it a tow around the yard trouble is it's like driving a tank as the engines not fired up there isn't any power steering!!! Lol

Hi with the crank issues not really having an answer what was wrong, and now this starter issue I'd be real reluctant to be towing this thing to
start it as I didn't do the work and know it was right first. I have had a couple over 30 years that turned over good, but wouldn't quite fire up
on a first start after a rebuild. They ran within 10 ft though, and started every time after with a battery. just because you got a "new" battery or
starter don't mean its still any good, I have had both faulty in the last few years with quality dropping through the floor these days. your old
starter could be worn out to.

I wonder if the battery going flat could be a ground issue somewhere causing high draw, what gets hot or smokes when this happens ? it could also
be the cables are going bad to are they hot anywhere. I had a tractor here we stopped it wouldn't even turn next time. The cable died just like
that, we replaced it and really noticed a difference to the point it hadn't been turning over that fast for a year or more before this happened.

You need to be diagnosing not just throwing parts. I'd like to say maybe you need help from a good mechanic with this now, because if you did this
build your self to save money. You could be loosing the saving real quick if something major is wrong and it blows up on a first start. I'm not
trying to run you down. I just get to fix stuff guys with little to no experience have messed with and not fixed, or made problems worse more than a
few times I care to sort out over the years. The experience should say how tight it actually is or isn't.

Regards Robert

Might want to get a good charge in the battery, a slow, overnight charge. Being new, it could have been on the shelf a while, or never fully charged.

As others said, feel for hot spots at the connections. If it has replacement cable ends, get some new cables. Be sure they are large, truck type, not automotive. Clean the block connection where the ground connects down to bare metal. Be sure the starter is tight. It grounds through the mount surface.

One other thing, be sure the hydraulic levers are all in neutral. A loaded hyd pump will stall a starter.
